With two long shots winning the Memorial in 2005 and 2006, is Dave Price looking to take the field again in 2007 with his Memorial Tournament predictions?

Your first thought for this weekend’s winner may be taking the field at 3/1 odds considering last year’s winner was lesser known Carl Pettersson and the 2005 winner was lesser known Bart Bryant. But in 2007, I would not count on the field to cash your tickets.

Jim Furyk is coming off a solid second place finish at Colonial last week and shows great value at 18/1 odds. I don’t think he’ll be able to shake last week’s playoff loss at Muirfield Village though. So if you have already pegged Furyk, you may want to go back to the drawing board.

Zach Johnson tied for second in last year’s Memorial Tournament. Can the 2007 Master’s champ win the Masters of the Midwest this time around? He is coming off a much needed win at the AT&T Classic after a 16th place finish at The Players and a hideous 84th place finish at Wachovia. He shows excellent value at 33/1 odds and we would love to take him except that Tiger Woods will be out for blood after a sour Players Championship.

At 9/4 odds, longshot lover’s will hate taking Tiger, but he legitimately is our best bet. He did not play the Memorial last year due to his father’s death and he will look to win this event as he gets geared up for the U.S. Open. Woods is coming off a terrible showing at The Players Championship taking a 37th place finish at the Sawgrass Stadium Course. With Muriel Village Golf Club very similar to August National, one has to like Tiger’s chances on the course. Woods is the PGA leader in Eagles per hole which looks good for him on this shot maker’s golf course. He is also 4th in sand saves which will also bode well on a course which seems to have been built around bunkers. Tiger’s ability to save himself on bad shots is what sets him apart on this course, but I don’t anticipate him getting into much trouble.

Mickelson is also having a very solid year and is coming off a nice Players Championship win at Sawgrass, but his 78th ranking in sand saves and his 61st ranking in greens hit in regulation (Woods is 4th) has me steering away from him. Phil has to play his best golf to win where as Tiger just has to play good enough. At 9/4 odds, we won’t get the kind of return we might be hoping for, but at least we will get a return as Tiger Woods is our best bet for this weekend’s Memorial Tournament.
