Head coach Andy Reid and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhingweg have developed a West Coast hybrid offense that leaves plenty of room for Donovan McNabb’s out-of-the-pocket improvisation and also allows him to put his improved deep touch on display. Brian Westbrook’s breakout season was largely due to McNabb’s injury. His emergence as a durable, every-down option gives the Eagle yet another dangerous weapon to hurl at their opponents. Reid almost certainly will default to his standard 60-40 pass-run ratio, however, but don’t be surprised if we see Westbrook used frequently as a receiver like Tomlinson is San Diego or Bush in New Orleans. The Eagles’ veteran line is solid as a rock led by right tackle John Runyan. All five starters played all 16 games last season and these boys, without a doubt, make McNabb’s job look a hole lot easier. The Eagle have very good depth as well which should mean another successful season provided McNabb can keep himself on the field and that the team can establish a deep presence without Wide Receiver Donte Stallworth in the picture anymore.
Defensive coordinator Jim Johnson has a very simple approach: attack! We should nickname his defense the Blitzkrieg because he blitzes more than any other defensive coordinator in the National Football League. The key is that he still does so intelligently when his team provides a balanced pass rush which te Eagle have most of the time. That’s why we don’t see these boys getting exposed too often despite all the blitzing. The corners can handle man coverage, and the linebackers and defensive ends are athletic enough to drop in coverage, but the run defense was more than a major concern, ranking 26th last season. An atrocious stretch in the middle of the season and the playoff loss to New Orleans put the team’s biggest weakness on center stage.
With the division’s hands down best offense and the potential to make drastic improvements against the run on the defensive side of the ball, the Eagles are our favorites to win the NFC East for the sixth time in seven years. If health does not become an issue, a trip to Super Bowl XLII is not out of the question.
