How can you bet against Jeff Gordon this weekend at Darlington in the Dodge Avenger 500? Gordon is NASCAR’s points leader and he is tearing up the track. Six poles, three first place finishes, three seconds, one third, and two fourths has Jeff Gordon back in the saddle to collect a Nextel Cup title.

If anyone can top Gordon, it will likely be his Hendrick Motorsports teammate Jimmie Johnson. He is ranked number two in the Nextel Cup standings and has perhaps been better than Gordon behind the wheel on race day collecting four first place finishes. This guy hasn’t made a mistake the last nine races finishing fifth or better in seven of them. We also can’t forget that Johnson won both races at Darlington in 2004 before the event merged into its current format.

I know that the NASCAR savvy fans are already screaming that I’ve forgotten about Greg Biffle who has won this event the past two years. I’m hear to say I haven’t forgotten and also that he hasn’t come anywhere close to the form which earned him a tie for second in the series in 2005. Despite his impressive track record, he and his Ford haven’t been getting the job done this season. I consider him a long shot no matter what the oddsmakers say.

Like Biffle, Tony Stewart has also been a disappointment this season. Stewart’s mouth has been making a lot more noise off the track than on it on race day. Stewart was the pick of many race fans to win the cup in 2007, but he only has two top five finishes and neither were wins. As much as I want to say Stewart is due, he only ran 12th at Darlington last season and with the way he has been performing doesn’t stand much of a chance.

Bad news for you Dale Earnhardt Jr. fans and I’m sure you already know. His contract negotiations with DEI nearly have him out of the chase as his focus appears to be more on that than his racing. He has just two top five finishes in 12 races at Darlington so I think it’s safe to say that he isn’t a big fan of this track.

I normally look for that good value bet, but all signs point to our points leader. Gordon has had great success at this track with 14 top five finishes and 17 top tens. Of those he has recorded six victories and don’t think for a second that he isn’t still thinking about last year’s runner-up finish. Gordon is hungry in 2007 winning poles and races. I’ll put my money on him and his Chevy this weekend.
