2007 Arizona Cardinals Preview and Predictions
May 22, 2008
The 2007 Arizona Diamondbacks will go as far as their pitching will take them. It’s as simple as that.
Randy Johnson comes back home where he and the Diamondbacks are hoping his stuff will be revitalized. When the Big Unit was with Arizona, he collected four National League Cy Young Awards, a World Series ring, and World Series co-MVP honors. The lanky lefty is hoping that returning to the NL and the warm Arizona weather will return him to form. In Johnson’s first stint with the Diamondbacks, he teamed up with Curt Schilling to present the best one-two punch in the National League. Now he and Brandon Webb, who collected NL Cy Young honors last season, have a chance to be that duo. Livan Hernandez and Doug Davis take the next two spots to give Arizona four quality starters in a weak division. This will give the Diamondbacks the chance to win some ball games even when their offense fails them. An inconsistent bullpen is of course the downfall of Arizona’s staff. Good thing all four of these guys are used to pitching late into ball games.
I don’t know if you would recognize any names in the batting order. You may have got word of Eric Byrnes last season who slugged 26 long balls and drove in 79 hitting in the lead-off spot. His 25 steals to go along with his power numbers put him in elite company last season as one of only three guys in the National League to hit 25 homeruns and steal 25 bases. The household name on offense has been Luis Gonzalez. With Gonzalez moving on, the rest of these talented youngsters will have to make names for themselves. The potential is there, but still a few years away. Offense will hold this team back in 2007.
Arizona is undoubtedly building for the future, but they better build quickly if they want to try to make another run with the Big Unit who may not have to many more seasons left in him. An inconsistent offense is going to keep this team from challenging for the NL West, but a solid pitching staff will keep them in most games in a weaker division. If Arizona’s young guns get things figured out sooner than expected, they just might surprise us this year.
I think the Diamondbacks will be a profitable team in 2007. You’ll see some improvement at home and on the road because of the caliber of pitchers they’ll throw at teams on a daily basis. Like they say, betting baseball is all about the pitchers. We know that there is a lot more that goes into it than that, but pitching is always where you have to start.
