The Indianapolis Colts came through in crunch time last season destroying the Bears in rainy Miami to finally get the monkey off Peyton Manning’s back that still haunts Dan Marino. The Colts have won four straight division titles and have had four straight seasons with at least 12 victories. So it probably comes as no surprise that we are picking the Colts to take the weak AFC South once again.
Not too many people thought the Colts had much of a chance to win the Super Bowl last season with as badly as its defense played against the run. As a result the Colts dropped four of their final seven games of the regular season. A porous defense surrendered at least 100 yards rushing in every single game last season and was considered a severe handicap before a stunning turnaround with the return of strong safety Bobby Sanders in the playoffs. Even a Super Bowl win doesn’t have me convinced that the Colts defense has fixed its problems and the losses of RB Dominic Rhodes, weak side linebacker Cato June and cornerbacks Nick Harper and Jason David must be accounted for if the Colts hope to defend their title.
The Colts offense is the definition of a well-oiled machine. Peyton Manning has been the backbone of this unit and enters his 10th season under center this year. Number one receiver Marvin Harrison, offensive coordinator Tom Moore and offensive line coach Howard Mudd are also entering their 10th seasons to show you why this unit has so much cohesion. How does Peyton Manning pick his opponents apart? One reason is that he is rarely sacked. The Colts’ offensive line allowed the fewest sacks in the league for the third straight season and Indy set an NFL record with the highest third down conversion rate in league history at 56.1 percent.
One would never expect a Super Bowl champ to give up a league worst 173 rushing yards per game and 22.5 points per game during the regular season. But somehow this team got focused in the postseason and only allowed 82.8 rushing yards and 16.3 points per game. Dungy’s same Tampa-2 that was lacking in the regular season looked like a mastermind defense in the playoffs. It was apparent that Bobby Sander gave this team a lift in the postseason and it will be nice to have him healthy from day one, but the loss of yet another quality linebacker in Cato June (the 4th in five seasons) might be an irreplaceable setback that will really hurt this team come playoff time.
Expect another solid season out of the Colts, but a repeat hoisting of the Lombardi Trophy is not likely.
