2006 was a season of change for the Chiefs. You didn’t see former head coach Dick Vermeil or offensive coordinator Al Saunders and his explosive offensive system which has long dominated the league. You didn’t see future Hall of Famer offensive lineman Willie Roaf or running back Priest Holmes. And now, Trent Green, who has been a staple under center for six seasons, is gone as well.

Herman Edwards, formerly of the Jets, came to the City of Fountains last season and with him a much more conservative offense which focuses on controlling the football on the ground and not turning it over. This approach worked out okay since the defense was more competitive last season, but the once dominant offensive front looked like a shell of its former self without Roaf. Somehow, the Chiefs ended up in the playoffs, but an ugly first round loss to the eventual Super Bowl champion Colts showed us that they didn’t belong.

Though the coaching staff swears up and down that some of the jargon and philosophies that Dick Vermeil installed in the offense remain the same, it’s clear that this is no long Vermeil’s offense. When offensive coordinator Al Saunders went to Washington after Vermeil’s retirement, he took K.C.’s wide open spread attack with him. Saunders and Vermeil has no problem taking chances down the field as there is always that possibility that it could be a big game changing play. Herman Edwards squashed that mentality from day one turning running back Larry Johnson into a workhorse and installing a scheme which preaches to avoid turnovers at all costs.

Herman Edwards put his focus into improving the defense from day one and it has already started to pay off. For as conservative as Edwards is offensively, he is very aggressive defensively. Defensive coordinator Gunther Cunningham has enough playmakers to blitz, blitz, and blitz some more. The additions of linebackers Donnie Edwards and Napoleon Harris and defensive tackle Alfonso Boone make this unit even better.

The Chiefs definitely didn’t sit around this offseason, especially on the defensive side of the ball. Herman Edwards will go to battle with a nice mix of youth and experience to get back to the postseason again in 2007. This team will be on that playoff fence for sure, but a deteriorating offensive line could hinder the run-first scheme that Edwards prefers and could end up ultimately keeping the Chiefs from the playoffs.
