The San Diego Chargers were the best regular season team in the NFL last season, but their inexperience showed up in the playoffs as the team made a much earlier departure than expected. With a new coaching staff trying to adequately fill the shoes of an All-world staff previously in place, we’ll see if San Diego can charge through their competition again this season. Find out how Dave Price has the upcoming season shaping up in his 2007 San Diego Chargers predictions.

The Chargers finished an NFL-best 14-2 last season and then turned around and shocked the world by firing head coach Marty Schottenheimer. To add insult to injury, coordinators Cam Cameron and Wade Phillips jumped ship for head coaching jobs. I’m not sure what A.J. Smith was thinking when he deemed Schottenheimer’s 200 career wins expendable, especially when Norv Turner was the best he could do for a replacement. So now I guess we’ll see just how valuable this All-Star coaching staff was to this talented team.

Norv Turner is just 58-82-1 as an NFL head coach in his previous stops in Oakland and Washington. To be fair, he’s never had a talent pool like he inherits with this Charger team, but he’s still going to have to make a believer out of me. Honestly, there’s no way that this team doesn’t win 10 games with any coach in the world. That’s how much talent they have, but Turner does not seem to be the guy who can get them to the Super Bowl.

The Chargers resigned outside linebackers Shaun Phillips and offensive guard Kris Dielman in the offseason to ensure that they would head into 2007 with the most complete roster in the NFL. Now, this group of talented performers will forever be haunted if they can not make it to the Super Bowl. Hopefully last season allowed the Lighting Bolts to gain the postseason experience they needed to be up to the task in 2007.

Brilliant offensive coordinator Cam Cameron headed for South Beach to get paid and to try to turn around the Dolphins wrecked offense. If you ask anyone in NFL circles, they’ll tell you that few offensive minds are more suited to take over the reigns in San Diego than Norv Turner’s. He first rose to stardom as the coordinator of the dominant Dallas Cowboys teams in the early ‘90’s. He will once again have that kind of talent to work with and maybe he can dig up some old plays to bolster this already powerful attack.

The Chargers terrorized opposing QBs in 2006. They weren’t too shabby in yards allowed and point either finishing 10th and seventh overall respectively. There’s no question that the departure of defensive coordinator Wade Phillips is going to effect this defense. If I’m Ted Cottrell, who takes over for Phillips, I watch every single game film from last year and mimic Phillips’ approach to a tee.
