The Browns are the perennial AFC North bottom feeders and I have no reason to believe they’re getting out of the basement this season. Expectations were sky high last season after a big offseason spending spree, but a “here we go again attitude” seemed to hit as soon as LeCharles Bentley, who was expected to star on the offensive line, went down in the first training camp practice with a serious knee injury. The Browns ended up finishing nine games behind first place Baltimore with just four wins last season. Cleveland didn’t win a single game in divisional play as it was obvious that this team couldn’t match up defensively with the more talented offenses of the Ravens, Bengals, and Steelers. Somehow head coach Romeo Crennel was able to keep his job despite his handling of the team being questioned all season long. Another four or even a five-win year and owner Randy Lerner will have no choice but to give Crennel the boot. General Manager Phil Savage is also on the hot seat. The Browns badly need to show Lerner that they are on the brink and unfortunately for Crennel and Savage, 2007 is the only year these two have left to prove that they can lay the foundation of a successful team. It won’t be enough time, and these two will likely be on their way out after the season unless Lerner shows extreme mercy or should I say stupidity. However, Savage’s impressive 2007 draft bringing in QB Brady Quinn and offensive line tackle Joe Thomas could be a big missing piece of the puzzle and could save Crennel and Savage from getting the axe.

Last season, the Brown’s offense featured shaky QB play and an offensive line full of holes. Hopefully Quinn and Thomas can go a long way in shoring up these areas. Both offensive coordinators resigned in 2006 after not being able to get anything out of the unit and now the team brings in Chargers TE coach Rob Chudzinski to bring in the magic that the Chargers had last season. He is regarded as one of the game’s up and coming minds and Cleveland might be getting a gem in the making.

Defensively, the Brown’s 27th ranking in total defense tells the story of this team’s struggles. What it all comes down to for this unit is that their defensive front is weak and they get no pressure on passers. If Kamerion Wimbley, who has 11 sacks as a rookie out of the outside linebacker spot does not endure a sophomore slump, the Browns could have a perennial Pro Bowler in the making. He is really the only bright spot on a defense which has no lock down corner. There are still holes to be filled at every level of the defense before this team can compete in the AFC North.
