Nebraska looks to be poised for another dominant year in the Big 12 North division. QB Sam Keller transfers in to pick up where all Big-12 selection Zac Taylor left off. The Huskers once boasted some of the best backs in the country and their third and fourth string rushers could have started for most division one programs. Now, their running back depth has disappeared so the Huskers may have to rely on the pass even more in 2007. But if Arizona State transfer Keller is as good as advertised, the Huskers should repeat as North champs.
Get ready for an explosive offensive season out of Chase Daniel and the Missouri Tigers. This side of the ball has enough fire power to make them a factor in the North division race, but their defensive shortcomings, which we saw first hand in 2006, will continue to haunt the Tigers this season. Last season, the Tigers allowed seven different 100-yard rushers in their final six regular season games. These boys have to find a way to stuff the run.
Ron Prince came into Kansas State and delivered a seven win season — the most wins by a first-year Big 12 coach since 1999. With such a fast start under Prince, the Wildcats’ improvement will level off a little more in season two, which will leave this team short of title contention for now. Quarterback Josh Freeman exceeded the hype as a frosh and led the ‘cats to their first bowl game in three years. An infertile running game due to a weak offensive line will most definitely hold this team back.
Kansas will come to battle with an improved defense which at least will keep the Jayhawks in most games. However, last season’s last ranked pass defense is bad news for a team playing in a league will dazzling passers. Talented junior Aqib Talib at least offers the Jayhawks one lockdown defender in the secondary. If Kansas could have competed in the fourth quarter last season, they would have been bowling again in 2006. Late collapses led to five of six losses last season which could have easily gone the Jayhawks’ way.
The Colorado Buffaloes have been a major disappointment. A team that used to challenge for titles came up with just two wins last season. I give them credit for an overly ambitious non-conference schedule, but perhaps getting thumped by Florida State and Miami does less for recruiting than playing some teams you know you can beat to bolster your overall record and give yourself a shot at a bowl game. Nine offensive starters return and a run game that is very solid, but no passing attack and an inconsistent defense keeps this team near the cellar floor.
Iowa State has three guys that are as good as any in the Big 12 and would star on any team in the nation. I’m talking about QB Brett Meyer, wide receiver Todd Blythe, and linebacker Alvin Bowen. However, losing four starting offensive lineman is going to make this once sound offensive unit look more like a rusty old tractor than a well-oiled machine. Gene Chizik’s first season as Iowa State’s head man is going to be one he’ll like to forget, but his ties to Texas recruiting give the Cyclones hope for the future.
