I want you to get Jeff Gordon and Jimmie Johnson out of your heads right now. Gordon will be a little bit more of a cautious driver this week after enduring a crash in last week’s Coca-Cola 600. He is going to want to add to his points lead so we won’t see him calling off the dogs, but I don’t think you’ll see the pedal to the metal either. He hasn’t won this race since 1996. Will stay away from him this week.
Jimmie Johnson would be your next logical choice if you are staying away from Gordon right? Wrong! A tenth place finish last week with underdog drivers turning up the heat leads me to believe he’ll take another step back this week. Johnson finishes outside the top ten at Dover.
Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Tony Stewart are making some quiet noise. Earnhardt’s off the track battles with DEI and his 100 point fine for using illegal points has almost hidden the fact that he has finished inside the top 13 five races in a row. His performance here last year, 10th in this event and 21st in the fall race, doesn’t give me the confidence I need to make him my winner.
Stewart’s season can be summed up in one word, “inconsistency.” However, he has strung together three straight top ten finishes. But no wins in 2007 and 25th and 33rd place finishes at Dover last year make it impossible to pull the trigger on Tony.
Casey Mears took the checkered flag last week and we can get him showing great value at 35/1 odds this week, but I’m not biting on any back-to-backs on a guy whose average finish is 27th this season.
No more beating around the bush. We’ll make Matt Kenseth our man to win this Sunday. He is currently third in the Nextel Cup Standings and sees a great opportunity to move up in the points after watching Gordon really struggle last week. Since a 27th place finish at Daytona, he has been outstanding, running in the top 11 in the next seven races. He is the defending champion of this event and followed that up with a 10th place finish in the fall race. He does some of his best driving on this short track. He is showing more value than the odds front runners at 9/1 odds. Let’s pound Kenseth at Dover.
