2007 Los Angeles Angels Picks & Predictions
May 22, 2008
The Angels looked to me to be the favorite to win the West last year, but surprising offensive production from Frank Thomas and a comeback year by Barry Zito got the A’s over the hump in 2006. The Angels won the division in 2005 by seven games over Oakland and I think they’ll probably do it by 10 in 2007 with the A’s losing both Thomas and Zito which takes away two key contributors in both phases of the game.
The Angels often benefit from playing in a very weak division and baseball’s smallest division with just four teams, but the 2007 Angels have a chance to do something in the postseason. Despite perception that the AL West is the weakest division in baseball, the Angels had a winning record against each of the three American League Divisions last season. With that in mind, it’s surprising that the Angels had a losing record against the National League which has the perception of being the weaker of the two leagues from top to bottom. The Angels will be even better this season, and will look to clean up when they are facing the weaker teams in the other AL divisions. We will aslo look to go against the Angels when they are on the road in interleague play if their shaky play against the NL continues this season. In addition, to those standard plays, we will also look to sneak up on the upper echelon teams in the AL East and Central Divisions in the right spots when the value is there and the right pitching matchup presents itself.
The Angels are really the only team out West this season that has a chance with the exception of the Dodgers in the other league. The Angels aren’t just a good team in a poor division, they are a good team period. Their 2002 World Series victory and 2005 appearance in the ALCS proves it. The Angels might be a season away from really pushing for World Series rings, but their young talented pitching staff will have them very close in 2007. Offensively Vlad Geurrero and Garret Anderson are some of the best middle of the order guys in baseball and should be mentioned in MVP discussions every year. That’s how good and how valuable these players are. The Angels were also able to steal Gary Matthews Junior from Texas to give themselves another strong homerun threat. The Angels will have great home success even against baseball’s giants like the Yankees, Red Sox, White Sox, Twins, and Tigers. It’s tough on these teams traveling clear out west to play a team with a great pitching staff. We’ll make a nice little chunk of change taking the Angels against these teams as well at home in 2007.
