San Diego Chargers- AFC West Prediction- 1st Place (11-5)

No more Schottenheimer calling the shots. No more Cam Cameron or Wade Phillips. The dissipation of one of the league’s best coaching staffs is going to cost this team some wins and a shot at a Super Bowl. If San Diego really thinks Norv Turner is the answer, I think that they should look at his 58-82-1 record which speaks more loudly. He will do better with the wealth of talent that San Diego has. Coaching the Chargers is like going to battle with a genetic hybrid army. A lack of postseason experience and having to deal with a new coaching staff presents some hurdles for this Chargers squad. They will get through most of them, but I’m not sold that these boys can contend for the Super Bowl just yet.

Denver Broncos- AFC West Prediction- 2nd Place (10-6)

Last year’s 9-7 season wasn’t good enough to make the playoffs and the tragic deaths of CB Darrent Williams ad RB Damien Nash added insult to injury. But with the moves made in the offseason to strengthen an already solid lineup, brighter days should be ahead for the Broncos. This is now the Jay Cutler era and Broncos fans are very excited at his prospects. With Dre Bly being added to the Broncos defensive secondary with the likes of Champ Bailey, and John Lynch, you won’t find a better defensive backfield in the league. If Cutler and the defensive line continue to improve, the Broncos should be back in the postseason.

Kansas City Chiefs- AFC West Prediction- 3rd Place (8-8)

Larry Johnson fits well into Herman Edwards’ run-oriented ball control offense, but the offensive line doesn’t. The Chiefs still haven’t found an adequate replacement for future Hall of Famers Willie Roaf and Will Shields. Even Pro Bowler Brian Waters was not as solid last season, likely because he did not have Roaf on his side. If Johnson had a solid line, who knows what kind of numbers he could put up. Edwards will have the tough task of finding a new signal caller with Trent Green likely out soon. The defense will continue to improve as that is Edwards’ emphasis, but not having enough fire power on offense will limit this team.

Oakland Raiders- AFC West Prediction- 4th Place (4-12)

The silver and black should change their colors to black and blue because they have taken plenty of lumps the last four years. Since winning 11 games in 2002, the Raiders have only won 15 the last four seasons and fell to a low point of just two wins. The defense does show promise, quite a bit actually, but the offense managed just 12 touchdowns last season and finished dead last in several statistical categories so it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to know where the problems lie. The Raiders’ defense was first against the pass and third in overall yardage allowed. Oakland might be best served by letting these boys play offense too. Can JaMarcus Russell step in and revitalize this offense like Vince Young did in Tennessee. Not even close to likely. Oakland can’t even think about having a passing attack until they can bring in some better offensive lineman.
