Baltimore Ravens- AFC North Prediction- 1st Place (11-5)
It was supposed to be a three-team race in the AFC North last season between Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cincinnati, but the Ravens flew away with it all thanks to the league’s top-ranked defense and veteran QB Steve McNair. I have no doubts about this team once again handling their league in the regular season, but their playoff flop against the Colts has me questioning if they can do any damage in the postseason. The Ravens swept the Browns and Steelers last season and split with the Bengals. Likely the same scenario will play out this year, but I don’t think this team is explosive enough to get it done in the playoffs.
Cincinnati Bengals- AFC North Prediction- 2nd Place (10-6)
So much talent and so many heads that aren’t screwed on tight. Shouldn’t Terrell Owens be playing for this team. There was no more maddening team in 2006. The Bengals won three games to start the season, then lost five of six, and then won four in a row, before the bottom completely fell out. Carson Palmer is outstanding. Chad Johnson is in the prime of his career and T.J. Houshmandzadeh is a perfect compliment. Chris Henry is another talented wideout, but he will miss the first eight games of the season after being suspended by the league last April. Too many off the field issues and a lackluster secondary keep this team from being the Super Bowl threat they were in 2005.
Pittsburgh Steelers- AFC North Prediction- 3rd Place (7-9)
When head coach Bill Cowher said he was retiring we might as well have ripped every player on this team’s heart out. No head coach in the NFL can duplicate his passion and energy that he brings to the field every single day. Ben Roethlisberger has a tough 2006 trying to bounce back quickly from a motorcycle accident. He’ll be better in 2007. Willie Parker is a huge asset in the backfield rushing for nearly 1500 yards last season. This team is solid on both sides of the ball, but it will take some adjusting to a new head man and playing in a stacked division will keep them out of the playoff picture.
Cleveland Browns- AFC North Prediction- 4th Place (5-11)
You can always count on the Cleveland Browns to finish in the basement of the AFC North. If anybody wants to bet against that take it on full steam ahead. Cleveland was winless in division play last season. It amazes me that with all the NFL Head Coach’s that left their teams last season that Romeo Crennel wasn’t one of them. The prospects of what Brady Quinn and Joe Thomas could be for this franchise on offense could save Crennel his job for at least one more year. It will be the same old story in Cleveland, but at least you Brownies have a few players to be excited about. Hopefully Quinn is not another Couch.
