I like the Deamon Deacons of Wake Forest to rule the ACC Atlantic division again in 2007. They return 15 starters from last year’s championship squad (eight on offense) giving them a solid nucleus on each side of the football. Having to play a daunting schedule with targets on their backs is the only thing that could keep the Deacs from repeating as ACC Atlantic Division champs. Beating the Seminoles at home on October eleventh could be the difference between first and second place.
Florida State will do it with defense in 2007 to help out their young QBs. Eight road games including trips to Boston College and Virginia Tech late in the season could get the better of this team. Head coach Bobby Bowden and cutthroat offensive line coach Rick Trickett have called out their troops on their toughness. Expect less four-wide spread formations and much tougher run oriented attack this season. Only toughness is going to get the Seminoles through a grueling road slate.
If you’re looking for a sleeper in the ACC Atlantic, it just might be the Boston College Eagles. Getting off to a good start with wins over Wake Forest and Georgia Tech in the first three weeks could give this team enough momentum to be this year’s Wake Forest. It’s going to take plenty momentum as four of their final six games are on the road, and that’s why a conference title looks seemingly unlikely. Look for BCs talented QB Matt Ryan to provide plenty of fireworks throughout the season as one of the best offensive players in the league.
Clemson is going to run, run, and run some more at their opponents with a top notch tailback tandem. With expectations high for the Tigers, look for Tommy Bowden’s team to buckle under the pressure as they lack the leadership needed to be successful at the QB position. Cullen Harper will likely not fill the QB void to the extent the Tigers need to challenge for their first league title since 1991.
I’ll start with the bad news for the North Carolina State Wolf Pack. Losing six defensive starters is going to set the Pack back. Also, the much underrated kicking game lost last years kicker and punter. The bottom line is that this inexperienced defense will be exposed early and often by some of the league’s better passing attacks and there’s really nothing the Wolf Pack can do about it. The little bit of good news is that new head coach Tim O’Brien brings a great track record and some much needed discipline to this program. And Darrell Blackman is the best kick/punt returning specialist in the ACC, but teams will likely kick to him less this season to neutralize his effect on the game.
Maryland is lacking a major talent supply on the defensive side of the football and no proven signal caller to stand behind a solid offensive line and deliver the ball to explosive wideouts. Last year’s surprise 9-4 season looks like it will be a short-lived success.
